The Story About Totem

I used the imposing geometric forms and exposed concrete surfaces of a brutalist monument, the Taal Monument in Paarl, as the backdrop for my series. This photograph was taken from the courtyard, looking outward toward the towering monoliths as they caught the fading light of the setting sun. The silhouette of my father, stepping into the frame, introduces a sense of scale and expectation. Around him, light and shadow move across the entire scene, softening the stark brutalist forms into something unexpectedly graceful, an unspoken stillness settling over the whole frame.

This award-winning photograph is part of the Future Past series. 'Totem' is a limited edition of 10 fine art prints, giclée printed with archival pigment inks on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, a 308gsm acid and lignin-free 100% cotton paper. Each print is inspected by hand, then named, numbered and signed by Mario Tarantino, with the reverse carrying the title, location, camera settings and the date the photograph was taken.
