The Story About Phoenix

'Phoenix' was photographed close to where I live, at the anchorage point of a suspension bridge. My intention from the start was abstraction. I focused on the outstretched pylons and the central steel structure, pulling the camera away from the bridge as infrastructure and toward something else entirely.

What held my attention was the transformation. An object engineered to stay perfectly still reads, from this angle, as something caught mid-flight, wings extended, weightless, alive. That shift from the fixed to the floating is what the image is about for me, and it carries a meaning that reaches beyond the photograph itself. The phoenix is one of the oldest symbols we have for overcoming adversity and emerging changed by it.

The meaning runs deep enough that I chose to hang the artist's proof in my own home. It is a daily reminder that renewal is always possible.

'Phoenix' is a limited edition of 10 fine art prints, giclée printed with archival pigment inks on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, a 308gsm acid and lignin-free 100% cotton paper. Each print is inspected by hand, then numbered and hand-signed by Mario Tarantino, with the reverse carrying the title, location, camera settings and the date the photograph was taken. A stamped and signed certificate of authenticity accompanies the work, and the edition price rises as prints sell.
