The Story About Hyperbola
For this series, I used the exposed concrete and minimalist construction of a brutalist-era monument, the Taal Monument in Paarl, South Africa. Shape, light, shadow and form came together in a synthesis that shaped a body of work unlike anything else I have made.
What drew me in was the interplay of sculptural outlines and open space, brought into focus against the clarity of a sky lit by the setting sun. The silhouette of my father, making his way toward the arched entrance, gives the frame its scale and holds an intrigue of its own. In creating this image, my aim was to conjure the feeling of another time and place entirely, somewhere not quite anchored to now.
This is the ambassador image for the Future Past series. 'Hyperbola' is a limited edition of 10 fine art prints, giclée printed with archival pigment inks on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, a 308gsm acid and lignin-free 100% cotton paper. Each print is inspected by hand, then named, numbered and signed by Mario Tarantino, with the reverse carrying the title, location, camera settings and the date the photograph was taken. A stamped and signed certificate of authenticity accompanies the work, and the edition price rises as prints sell.
