The Story About Haven

When photographing the Opera House of Valencia, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía designed by Santiago Calatrava, I wanted to emphasise its scale and sculptural presence. Standing directly before the façade, I let its sweeping curves and symmetry fill the frame, the architecture rising above me with a weight that felt closer to sculpture than to a building.

What completes the image is a woman entering the scene, dwarfed by the sheer scale of the structure around her, yet essential in providing scale and grounding the vision in reality. The photograph becomes a dialogue between extremes: Calatrava's monumental vision and the unassuming presence of a single passerby. It is within that contrast that the image finds its balance.

This award-winning photograph is part of the Scale of Space series. 'Haven' is a limited edition of 20 fine art prints, giclée printed with archival pigment inks on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, a 308gsm acid and lignin-free 100% cotton paper. Each print is inspected by hand, then named, numbered and signed by Mario Tarantino, with the reverse carrying the title, location, camera settings and the date the photograph was taken. A stamped and signed certificate of authenticity accompanies the work, and the edition price rises as prints sell.
