The Story About Arcade

The monument I photographed for the Future Past series is a study in brutalist geometry, bold concrete forms set against open sky. What drew me to this frame was the archway, a hard-edged opening that seemed to lead not into a building but into another landscape entirely. I set the composition so the arch read as a threshold rather than a doorway.

From those fixed concrete lines the image opens onto something dreamlike. Light and shadow move across the surfaces until the scene feels suspended, caught between a vision of the future and a fragment of the past. A single silhouette stands far off within the opening, giving the architecture its scale and holding the frame with a presence that is easy to miss and hard to forget.

The figure in the distance is my father. Placing him there was less a decision than a recognition, a moment where the person and the place said the same thing at once.

'Arcade' is a limited edition of 10 fine art prints, giclée printed with archival pigment inks on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, a 308gsm acid and lignin-free 100% cotton paper. Each print is inspected by hand, then named, numbered and signed by Mario Tarantino, with the reverse carrying the title, location, camera settings and the date the photograph was taken. A stamped and signed certificate of authenticity accompanies the work, and the edition price rises as prints sell. 'Arcade' is an award-winning piece from the series.
